It was founded in 2003 as a merger of the two clubs Red Boys and AS .

Red Boys Differdingen was founded on May 25, 1907 as SC Differdingen , making it one of the oldest football clubs in Luxembourg. On July 11, 1919, the name was changed to Red Boys . During the German occupation of Luxembourg , the club was called FK 07 Differdange from 1940 . Since 1944 he was again called the Red Boys . The Red Boys have been national champions six times and are Luxembourg record cup winners with 16 titles. In addition, they reached the cup final nine times. The venue was the Stade du Thillenberg , built in 1921, with a capacity of 6,300 seats.

Red Boys took part in the main round of a European competition ten times. The team met such prominent teams as AC Milan , Benfica Lisbon , Ajax Amsterdam and Olympique Lyon . The only victory dates back to September 19, 1979, when Omonia Nicosia was beaten 2-1 in the preliminary round of the European Cup in front of a home crowd. Due to a 1: 6 defeat in the second leg, Red Boys dropped out in the first round, as in all other participation in a European competition.

On September 18, 1984, in the first leg of the 1984/85 UEFA Cup first leg at the Stade Municipal Obercorn, they drew a remarkable 0-0 against Ajax Amsterdam. However, the Red Boys lost the second leg 0:14, which is a record in the UEFA Cup to this day.

In 1965 and 1979 the Red Boys were voted Luxembourg Team of the Year .

AS Differdange

The Association Sportive (Sport Association) Differdange was established in 1921. In 1940 the club was renamed FK Rotstern Differdingen , banned and dissolved in 1941. In 1944 it was re-established and renamed AS .

AS belonged to the National Division in the 1928/29 , 1935/36 , 1937/38 and 1939/40 seasons , but rose again after only one season.

The greatest success after the Second World War was reaching the national cup final in 1990 against Swift Hesperingen , in which AS lost 7-1 after a 3: 3 after extra time in the replay.

Sports development after the merger

In the year of the merger, Red Boys took eleventh place in the final table of the second-rate honorary doctorate . AS Differdingen was playing third class at this point. FC Differdange 03 took the place of Red Boys and made it to the national division in 2006 . At the end of the 2006/07 season , the club managed to move into the UEFA Intertoto Cup as third place . There the Differdinger were eliminated in the first round against Slovan Bratislava with 0: 2 and 0: 3.

At the end of the 2008/09 season , FC 03 was runner-up for the first time and qualified for the new UEFA Europa League . In the second qualifying round , the team met third in the Croatian championship HNK Rijeka . The first leg was won 1-0 by a goal from Pierre Piskor , but the second leg a week later in Croatia was lost 3-0, which is why they were eliminated in the first round in 2009.

From 2009 to 2013 Differdange 03 took fourth place four times in a row. In 2010 and 2011 the team qualified as cup winners, in 2012 by placing them in the Europa League.

In the second qualifying round of the 2011/12 Europa League , Differdange prevailed against Estonian participants FC Levadia Tallinn with 0-0 and 1-0. In the following round they were defeated by the Greek representative Olympiakos Volos in both games with 0: 3. Because Volos was excluded from the competition by UEFA a short time later because of allegations of manipulation, Differdange was the first Luxembourg club to advance to the play-off round, but was then defeated by the French first division side Paris Saint-Germain .

In June 2012, the commitment of Michel Leflochmoan was announced as the successor to the recently resigned coach Paolo Amodio . Under Leflochmoan, they qualified for the UEFA Europa League and won the Coupe de Luxembourg 2014 in the 2013 and 2014 seasons . In the 2012/13 season , the club NSÍ Runavík eliminated in the first qualifying round and failed in the next round at the Belgian first division club KAA Ghent . In 2013/14 , FC Differdange prevailed against KF Laçi in the first qualifying round for the Europa League and surprisingly against FC Utrecht in the next round . In the third round they lost against the Norwegian club Tromsø IL on penalties and were eliminated from the competition.

After the club had announced before the end of the season that it would not renew the contract with Leflochmoan, the day after the cup triumph, Marc Thomé was announced as the new coach for the 2014/15 season . With Thomé, the Differdinger reached the qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League in 2015 and 2016. In the 2015/16 season, FC Differdange 03 competed in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League and defeated the Welsh representative Bala Town , but failed in the following round to the Turkish representative Trabzonspor .

For the 2016/17 season , Frenchman Pascal Carzaniga took over the post of head coach and missed the championship with only one defeat this season due to the worse goal difference compared to F91 Dudelange. In the UEFA Europa League , FC 03 did not get past the first qualifying round and were defeated by Zirə FK from Azerbaijan 2-0 and 2-1. In the 2017/18 season, despite the participation of former top star Florent Malouda , they missed qualifying for the European Cup due to a disappointing fifth place.
