Tromsø IL ( Tromsø Idrettslag ) is a football club from Tromsø , Norway . Home is the Alfheim Stadium with a capacity of 7500 seats.

history

The club was founded on September 15, 1920 as Tromsø Turnforenings Fotballag (soccer team of the Tromsöer Gymnastics Association, in short Turn ). In 1930 the name was changed to Tromsø Idrettslag , as the Norwegian Sports Federation considered the old name to be too similar to that of the Tromsoe Gymnastics Federation. However, the name was changed again in 1931, from now on the club was called Tor . In 1931 the club won the North Norwegian Cup for the first time, at that time the greatest success that a club from North Norway ( Nord-Norge ) could achieve. The following year, the Norwegian Sports Federation ordered that the club could not be called Tor and had to rename itself again. So Tromsø Idrettslag was chosen again , and this name has remained to this day.

After the game break from 1940 to 1945 caused by the Second World War , Tromsø IL won the North Norwegian Cup competition for the second time in 1949. In 1956, the third North Norwegian Cup victory was celebrated.

From 1963 teams from Northern Norway were allowed to take part in the Norwegian Cup competition, and from 1972 they were also allowed to play in the highest Norwegian league, the Eliteserien . In 1985 Tromsø IL won the second division and thus made promotion. From 1986 to 2001 the club played in the top division without interruption.

While the first season in the league was difficult and Tromsø had to fight relegation, the sensation succeeded in the cup final against the high favorites Lillestrøm SK . Tromsø IL won the game and was able to celebrate the first Norwegian Cup victory in 1986. 1988 was already a fifth place in the Tippeligaen, and 1989 and 1990 were the most successful years in the league so far, with a third and a second place. The then coach Tommy Svensson became the Swedish national coach and achieved third place with the national team at the 1994 World Cup .

In 1996 Tromsø IL won the Norwegian Cup competition for the second time. The final opponent this time was FK Bodø / Glimt , which gave the final an additional meaning. It was the first time that two teams from Northern Norway met in a cup final. Tromsø won and was then considered the best club from Northern Norway.

The following years were changeable. While you played against relegation in 1997 and 1998, you reached sixth place in 1999 and even fourth place in 2000. In 1999, Rune Lange was Norway's top scorer with 23 goals, the first time that a North Norwegian club had the top scorer in the league.

However, a very poor season followed in 2001, and Tromsø IL had to relegate for the first time. The club lost seven games in a row, could only score 23 goals in 26 games and ended the championship in last place. Tromsø IL then invested a lot of money in new players, won the second division in 2002 and achieved immediate promotion.

The following ten years were largely successful, mostly a single-digit table position was achieved. Successful participation in the UEFA Europa League ; from 2011 to 2014 four times in a row. In 2013 Tromsø IL had to relegate to the second division after a 15th place. In the 2014 season , however, managed to get back up straight away as second in the table.

The years 2015 to 2019 were marked by the fight against relegation, which could no longer be avoided in 2019 . As a result, coach Simo Valakari was replaced by Gaute Helstrup before the 2020 season.

European Cup balance sheet

Tromsø IL has taken part in European competitions ten times so far: in 1987 and 1997 in the European Cup Winners' Cup , 1991/92, 2005/06, 2009/10, 2011/12, 2012/13, 2013/14 and 2014/15 respectively in the UEFA Cup . UEFA Europa League and 1995 in the UEFA Intertoto Cup .

In the 2005/06 season Tromsø IL rose in the second qualifying round in the tournament and reached the group stage, from which they were finally eliminated as the group bottom. In the 2009/10 season, the club played in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League , the successor to the UEFA Cup, and were eliminated in the play-offs against Athletic Bilbao . In 2011/12 they were eliminated in the second qualifying round, in 2012/13 in the play-offs. 2013/14 they were eliminated again in the play-offs against Beşiktaş Istanbul . Since UEFA excluded the Turkish club from all competitions, Tromsø IL took its place in the group stage and was eliminated last. The last season on the European stage was the 2014/15 season when Tromsø IL was eliminated in the second qualifying round.
