Roger Nilsen (born August 8, 1969 in Tromsø ) is a former Norwegian football player and today's coach.
Career
society
Nilsen started in Kvaløysletta's youth before getting his first professional contract with his hometown club Tromsø IL in 1987 . After only four appearances in his first season, he moved to Viking Stavanger in 1989 . During the winter break of the 1992/93 season he was loaned to Germany to 1. FC Köln , which was threatened with relegation and for which he played ten games by the end of the season. Back in Stavanger, he moved to England for Sheffield United , for which he played 166 league games over the next five years. In 1999 he moved to Tottenham Hotspur , where he was only used three times. For the 1999/2000 season, Nilsen moved to Austria for the Grazer AK , but went back to Norway after only 13 league appearances in 2000 and played for Molde FK from 2000 to 2001 and for Bryne FK from 2002 to 2003 . He then played away from professional football at Stavanger IF .
National team
Nilsen was appointed to the squad of the Norwegian U-16 national team for the first time in 1986 and played eight games for the team. 1987 to 1989 he played seven times for the Norwegian U19 , at the same time he had four appearances in 1988 in the U18. At the junior soccer world championship in 1989 he played three preliminary round matches for the U-20 national team . From 1989 to 1992 he played a total of 19 international matches for the U-21 national team , in which he scored two goals. On October 31, 1990 he made his debut for the senior national team , for which he completed a total of 32 games in ten years.
Trainer
After completing his training as a football coach in 2006, Nilsen took over the coaching position at his last club, Stavanger IF . From 2007 to 2010 he was assistant coach for the first team at Viking Stavanger . In 2014 he took over the women's team at IF Fløya in the highest Norwegian women's league after taking a coaching job at the Norwegian College of Elite Sports in Tromsø . In August 2016 he was relieved of his post as a coach.
Private
Roger Nilsen is the brother of the equally successful soccer player and coach Steinar Nilsen , who played for AC Milan and SSC Napoli . He has four sons, two of them from his first marriage in England, two with his current partner Torni Myrbakk.
