The Winchester Model 1897 is a forearm bolt action shotgun with an external striking piece (hammer) and a tubular magazine attached under the barrel . It was made in caliber 12 and 16 in different barrel lengths.
description
The M1897 was a further development of the Winchester Model 1893 , which had been developed by John Browning . It was the first successful forearm bolt action shotgun that was manufactured. From 1897 until production was stopped in 1957, over a million weapons of this type were manufactured in various designs. In the 1910s they were known as catalog goods in Germany with the Winchester model 1897 with the variants RF 1 and RF 2.
The Winchester Model 1897, like the M1912 or the Ithaca M37 , is one of the few weapons in which the next shot is triggered immediately when the trigger is held down when it is reloaded. This was called "slamfire".
Military use
The US Army first used the 12-caliber M1897 in a short-barreled version , also known as a trench gun, during the First World War . Particularly noteworthy are the perforated heat shield over the barrel and the possibility of attaching a bayonet . Total length 1000 mm, barrel length 495 mm, weight with empty magazine 3.3 kg.
Its magazine with a capacity of six rounds made this weapon a dangerous melee weapon (see trench warfare in the First World War ).
Even in World War II , it was used in small numbers by the US Army and the US Marine Corps .
