Lists on the subject

The Colt Model 1903 Hammerless was a lightweight self-loading pistol that was made in the USA.

history

The design for the weapon came from John Moses Browning . According to his patents, weapons were made in America as well as in Europe. Originally it was planned that the heavy bolted pistols would be reserved for the Colt company , while the light models with ground lock were intended for the Belgian Fabrique Nationale d'Armes de Guerre (FN) . The surprising success of the FN Browning Model 1903 changed that, Colt had a smaller pocket pistol designed on the basis of this.

Technology and commitment

The pistol was set up for the weak cartridge in caliber .32 ACP and was intended for civil use. For concealed carrying, the contours were rounded, the cock was completely covered. The English name of the weapon ( Colt Pocket Hammerless ) is misleading here, a cock was definitely there. The name was mainly used to distinguish it from another Colt model from the same year with an external tap. In addition to a safety lever on the slide, the weapon also had a safety grip. In 1926 a magazine safety was also installed. Due to the great demand, a more powerful version was released with the Colt model 1908 in caliber .380 ACP . Production spanned more than four decades, with around 570,000 pieces being made. During the Second World War, the American military chose this pistol as a self-defense weapon for officers of the general rank. It remained in this role until 1972 when it was replaced by the M 15 pistol.
