History, commitment
With the entry into World War I , the US armed forces' need for weapons increased. Not enough Springfield M1903s could be made and so the system of the Pattern 1914 Rifle in caliber .303 British , produced for the British armed forces in the USA, was adopted. It was manufactured in US caliber .30-06 , for which the magazine housing had to be adapted to the rimless cartridge. It was charged with the charging strip from the Springfield M1903. The gun was introduced on October 8, 1917 as the US Rifle, .30 caliber, Model of 1917 .
Many members of the US-American Expeditionary Forces , who were sent to Europe after the US declaration of war on the German Empire on April 6, 1917 , were armed with the US Rifle, .30 caliber, Model of 1917 . Since the Springfield M1903 was introduced as the standard rifle after the war , the army no longer needed the M1917. Some of them were stored, given out to arm the national guards or sold on the civilian market.
In the Second World War , the stored weapons were removed from the arsenals and revised. In some cases, new barrels were installed and the weapons were used for training. In 1940 615,000 and in 1941 119,000 of these weapons were delivered to Great Britain as part of the Lend Lease US aid for arming the Home Guard and secondary troops . So that these rifles, built in .30-06 caliber, were not confused with their almost identical predecessor - the Pattern 1914 Rifle in .303 caliber - the M1917 received a red stripe on the stock.
technology
As with the Mauser system, the cylinder lock locks directly behind the cartridge chamber. The safety lever is located at the rear right on the lock housing. The magazine holds 6 rounds, although the standard loading strips that were issued with the rifle only contain 5 rounds. The rear sight , protected by a massive frame, can be adjusted in steps of 100 yards from 200 to 900 yards and further in steps from 50 yards to 1600 yards. A is used for fine adjustment of the diopter Nonius , for the adjustment of the lateral direction of a screw.
