The Remington Arms Company, LLC is a leading US arms manufacturer headquartered in Madison , North Carolina . The product range includes rifles , shotguns , revolvers and pistols , as well as ammunition . The Remington brand also stands for collections of hunting clothing and hunting accessories (mainly USA). It is the only company in the United States that manufactures weapons and ammunition domestically without exception. Remington's products are exported to more than 60 countries around the world.

Remington is one of the largest producers of shotguns and rifles in the United States. Since 2010, the company has been producing handguns again with the Remington 1911 R1 . The weapon is based on the M1911 orderly pistol manufactured in the USA during World War I and is the first Remington pistol since 1998, when production of the Remington XP-100 ceased.

Remington is a subsidiary of the Remington Outdoor Company (formerly known as Freedom Group), which in turn is owned by Cerberus Capital Management . Clayton, Dubilier & Rice Inc. bought a minority stake in Remington in 1993. Marlin Firearms has been a subsidiary of Remington Arms since 2007 .

On February 13, 2018, it was announced that the parent company of the Remington Arms Company, the Remington Outdoor Company, has filed for bankruptcy . This is due to the company's high debt and falling demand for pistols and rifles in the United States. Bushmaster Firearms International is one of the subsidiaries of the Remington Outdoor Company . The insolvency proceedings could already be ended in May 2018 after a restructuring plan was accepted by the responsible insolvency judge. On July 28, 2020, Remington Arms again filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy .

history

Eliphalet Remington
around 1840

The company was founded in 1816 by Eliphalet Remington in Ilion, New York , under the name E. Remington and Sons . It is considered to be the oldest company in the United States that has been manufacturing weapons continuously since its inception.

Beginning of the 19th century

The story of Remington began in 1816. Eliphalet Remington II believed he could make a better weapon than he could buy. The farmers of the communities in the region at that time were known for having a wide range of manual skills and largely being able to support themselves. The winter season, when there was nothing to be done in the fields, was used to produce daily necessities, both for personal use and for local markets. Eliphalet's father was a blacksmith and wanted to expand his product range by making barrels for rifles . At that time, most people made their own rifles for reasons of cost. The stock or butt of the rifle was carved by hand, the barrel and the ignition lock were bought and then assembled.

In order to gain knowledge of barrel making, Eliphalet was sent to a well-known manufacturer by his father. His job was to buy a run there and watch the production techniques on the side. At the time, the method of making a barrel was to wrap long, flat, heated iron bars around a metal bar of the desired caliber . These were then repeatedly heated and hammered together until the bars connected and became a solid cylinder (hence the popular octagonal barrel shape in the past). When the cylinder was complete, the metal rod in the middle was pulled out and the barrel was finished. After the young man returned home, a successful running manufacture was opened in his father's forge in Ilion-Gorge, New York.

Eliphalet Remington designed one for flintlock and built this. In the autumn of the same year he took part in a shooting competition in which he took second place. His very well made weapon impressed some of the other shooters , many were so convinced of the quality that they immediately ordered a rifle. By the end of the day, Eliphalet Remington had received so many orders that he was officially in the gunsmithing business as of now .

In 1828 the plant moved to the Ilion, New York area; The Remington factory is still at this location today.

During the Civil War (1861-1865) Remington was able to convince the Union of his revolver , the Remington New Model Army in caliber .44, of which 106,000 copies were procured and introduced as an orderly weapon for the cavalry and officers. 4000 pieces of the smaller model in caliber .36 were procured for the US Navy.

In 1865 Remington was converted into a public company. After that, Remington began to gain a foothold in other lines of business.

In 1873 z. B. introduced the production of typewriters . This branch was sold to the Standard Typewriter Company in 1886 , with which the rights to use the Remington name were connected.

In 1902 the Standard Typewriter Company was renamed the Remington Typewriter Company .

In 1927 the Remington Typewriter Company merged with Rand Kardex Company and was then continued under the name Remington Rand . Remington Rand continued to manufacture typewriters and became one of the largest computer manufacturers ( UNIVAC ) of its time.

Firearms production was renamed the Remington Arms Company . This was bought in 1888 by Marcus Hartley and Partners, a leading company operating a chain of sporting goods stores and also owned by the Union Metallic Cartridge Company . The UMC in Bridgeport , Connecticut thus became Remington's munitions company.

The First World War

In 1912, Remington and Union Metallic Cartridge were merged into one company and from now on operated under the name Remington UMC . Remington still produces ammunition today under the UMC brand name

In 1914 the First World War broke out. Remington was contracted by some of the allied powers to manufacture weapons for them. Among these countries were France , Great Britain and Tsarist Russia .

Remington produced the following models for its clients:

In 1915 the factory in Ilion was expanded. Since this expansion, the area corresponds to its current dimensions.

With the expansion and intensification of the war, the production figures at Remington also grew.

During the First World War, Remington also manufactured a large part of the Pattern 1914 Rifles developed by the Enfield Royal Small Arms Factory for the Allies and its variant M1917 for the US troops in his Eddystone Rifle Plant in Chester (Pennsylvania) . It is also interesting that the Eddystone Rifle Plant was subordinate to General John T. Thompson .

In addition, the so-called Pedersen device was developed on an experimental basis at the time - a system that could be used in the M1903 Springfield rifle instead of the breech and converted it into a self-loading rifle with a 40-round magazine that had a cartridge the size of one Pistol cartridge fired through the gun barrel.

In 1917, towards the end of the war, the Russian Revolution took place . This had a serious impact on Remington's financial position. Before the revolution, Tsarist Russia wanted to delay payments because there were allegedly defects in the weapons delivered. When the Bolsheviks took power in 1918, they stopped paying because there were no contracts between them and Remington. Left with a huge store of war materials and no prospect of payments, the US government had to intervene to save the company from bankruptcy. The government sold the surplus of Mosin-Nagant rifles as sporting / hunting weapons in the civilian market. The rifle became the most popular sporting rifle of the 1920s due to its low price of just $ 3 a piece.

After the end of the war, Remington decided to withdraw from military weapon production and concentrate its business on the field of sporting and hunting weapons, which was considered to be economically stable.

The second World War

In the 1930s, during the recession , Remington was bought by DuPont . DuPont spent a long time doing research to improve gunpowder , which the company succeeded in doing and made it very successful. A year later, Remington bought the Peters Cartridge Company ; Today you can still find the abbreviation "RP", which stands for Remington-Peters, among Remington coins.

In 1940 the US military was concerned about the uninterrupted supply of ammunition to the troops. So the government approached Remington with a request to expand nationally with the help of the government to ensure ammunition production. With the help of the US government and support from DuPont, Remington built two munitions plants: the Lake City Arsenal and the Denver Ordnance . Three more plants followed later. These plants were officially owned by the US government, but Remington was charged with overseeing the quality and quantities of production.

The weapons Remington made for the US Army during World War II included the famous M1903 Springfield bolt-action rifle .

After the wars

In 1970, Remington closed the ammunition plant in Bridgeport, Connecticut, but also opened a new plant in Lonoke, Arkansas . Another plant for shooting targets and clay pigeons was established in Athens, Georgia .

In 1993 Remington was sold by DuPont to an investment firm called Clayton, Dubilier, and Rice , or CD&R for short.

In February 2018, it was announced that Remington would be forced to apply for bankruptcy protection due to the threat of bankruptcy. The reasons given were the company's high debt and falling demand for pistols and rifles in the USA. Since Remington filed on March 18 that bankruptcy should be averted in application of Chapter 11 , further operations are not affected for the time being, according to media reports.

In July 2020, the company finally applied for the initiation of insolvency proceedings again. Victim advocates in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School rampage accused Remington of speeding up bankruptcy proceedings in order to ruin their claims for damages. The attacker had used a Remington rifle from the AR-15 family in the act , and lawsuits against the company were frozen because of the bankruptcy proceedings. Remington scheduled an auction for the remaining assets on September 17, 2020 .
