Mayfield Woolen Mills Incorporated |
Mayfield is a small American town in western Kentucky .
The city is located in Graves County , of which it is the administrative seat. According to the 2000 population census, it has a total population of 10,349.
In the 19th century , a flourishing wool spinning mill , the "Woolen Mills Incorporated", set up shop here, specializing in the manufacture of cashmere wool underpants and thus ensuring the advance of industrialization in the predominantly rural area of the state . It was proudly stated that the workforce was far greater than that of any other Kentucky mill .
In the winter of 1936/37, the residents of the village - like those of other municipalities in the country - had to survive a severe flood disaster, in which many were evacuated.
In December 2004, the German Continental AG closed a production facility there despite increasing sales figures, so that an important employer in the municipality has ceased to exist.
