Chester E. Holifield

Chester Earl Holifield (born December 3, 1903 in Mayfield , Kentucky , †  February 6, 1995 ) was an American politician . Between 1943 and 1974 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1912, Chester Holifield moved with his parents to Springdale , Arkansas , where he attended public schools. He then moved to Montebello , California in 1920 . There he worked between 1920 and 1943 as a manufacturer and seller of men's clothing. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1934 to 1938 he was its regional chairman in Los Angeles County . Then he was party chairman in the twelfth congressional electoral district until 1940 . From 1940 to 1964 he participated as a delegate at all Democratic National Conventions .

In the 1942 congressional election , Holifield was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 19th constituency of California , where he succeeded Harry R. Sheppard on January 3, 1943 . After 15 re-elections, he was able to complete almost 16 legislative terms in Congress until his resignation on December 31, 1974 . During his time in Congress, the end of the Second World War , the beginning of the Cold War , the Korean War , the Vietnam War and, domestically, the civil rights movement and the Watergate affair fell . From 1969 to 1975 Holifield was chairman of the Committee on Government Operations . He also temporarily chaired the Atomic Energy Committee. In 1946 he was a member of a commission set up by President Harry S. Truman to investigate the effects of the atomic bomb tests on Bikini Atoll . Holifield has represented Congress at several international conferences on nuclear energy, nuclear weapons, water desalination and disarmament.

In 1974 Holifield declined to run again. He resigned on December 31, 1974, four days before the regular end of the legislative term. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he worked again in the textile industry, where he continued to manufacture and sell men's clothing.
