James Varni "Jimmy" Panetta (born October 1, 1969 in Washington, DC ) is an American politician . Since January 3, 2017, he has represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Panetta is the youngest son of former US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta . Between 1987 and 1989 he graduated from Monterey Peninsula College , then from 1989 to 1991 he studied foreign relations at the University of California, Davis . After completing a law degree at the Law School of Santa Clara University , he was admitted to the bar in 1996. Between 1996 and 2010, he served as the Assistant District Attorney in Alameda County . Since 2010 he has held the same office in Monterey County . These activities were interrupted by his active military service in the reserves of the United States Navy , where he served as an intelligence officer in Afghanistan . In his home country he is a member of numerous organizations and associations.

Politically, Jimmy Panetta joined the Democratic Party like his father . Since 2011 he has been vice chairman of the Democrats in Monterey County. In the 2016 congressional election , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in the 20th  electoral district of California against Republican Casey Lucius in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Sam Farr on January 3, 2017 , who in 2016 after 23 years in had no longer run for Congress .
