John K. Luttrell

John King Luttrell (born June 27, 1831 in Knoxville , Tennessee , †  October 4, 1893 in Sitka , Alaska ) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1879 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Luttrell attended public schools in his home country. In 1844 he and his parents moved to Alabama and a year later to Missouri . He came to California during the gold rush in 1852, where he worked in mining and agriculture in Yolo County . After moving several times, he finally made it to Oakland in 1856 . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in Oakland in 1856 in this profession. In 1856 and 1857 he was also a justice of the peace in his new home. In 1858 he moved to Siskiyou County , where he bought a ranch near Fort Jones . In the following years he worked in agriculture, mining and as a lawyer.

At the same time, Luttrell began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In the years 1865 and 1866 he held the honorary post of "Sergeant At Arms" in the California State Assembly . Later he was himself a member of this Chamber of Parliament between 1871 and 1872. In the congressional elections of 1872 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third electoral district of California , where he succeeded John M. Coghlan on March 4, 1873 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1879 . In 1878 he renounced another candidacy.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, John Luttrell resumed his previous activities. Between 1887 and 1889 he was a member of the Board of State Prison Directors . In 1893 he was appointed federal commissioner for fisheries and special agent for the Treasury Department in Alaska. He died that same year, October 4, 1893, in Sitka and was buried in Fort Jones.
