Gloria Negrete McLeod (born September 6, 1941 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American politician . From 2013 to 2015 she represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Gloria Negrete McLeod attended Chaffey Community College at Rancho Cucamonga . Later she worked in school as an instructional aide . Between 1995 and 2000 she was a member and chairman of the board of directors of Chaffey Community College . At the same time she embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . She was a member of the California State Assembly from 2000 to 2006 ; from 2006 to 2012 she was a member of the State Senate . She was a member of various committees in both chambers.

In the 2012 congressional election , Negrete was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 35th  constituency of California , where she succeeded Maxine Waters , who moved to the 43rd district, on January 3, 2013 . In the election she received 56 percent of the vote. Your opponent Joe Baca came to 44 percent and had to leave Congress . Negrete McLeod was supported in this election by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg with three million dollars, as she, in contrast to Baca, advocated firearms control.

In February 2014, she announced that she no longer wanted to run for the House of Representatives and would leave Congress after one term. Instead, she applied - albeit unsuccessfully - for a seat on the Board of Supervisors of San Bernardino County .

Gloria Negrete McLeod is married and has ten grown children, 27 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
