Juan C. Vargas (born March 7, 1961 in National City , California ) is an American politician . He has represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives since 2013 .

Career

Juan Vargas studied at the University of San Diego until 1983 and then until 1987 at Fordham University in New York City . After completing a law degree at Harvard University - one of his fellow students there was the future US President Barack Obama - and his admission to the bar in 1991, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1993 and 2000 he was a member of the San Diego City Council . He was then a member of the California State Assembly from 2000 to 2006 . He then sat in the State Senate from 2010 to 2012 . He was a member of several committees in both houses of the State Legislature . In between, he worked as a private businessman for a short time. In 1992, 1996 and 2006 he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for the respective elections to the US House of Representatives.

In the 2012 congressional election , Vargas was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 51st  constituency of California , where he succeeded Bob Filner , who has since been elected mayor of San Diego, on January 3, 2013 was. In the election, Vargas received 71 percent of the vote; his Republican rival Michael Crimmins came up with 29 percent. After three re-elections in 2014, 2016 and 2018, he can still hold office today. His new legislative period runs until January 3, 2021 with the option of a further candidacy in 2020. He is or was a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee , the Agriculture Committee and the Committee on House Administration , as well as several sub-committees.

Juan Vargas is married and has two daughters. The family lives privately in San Diego.
