Joe Baca

Joseph N. "Joe" Baca (born January 23, 1947 in Belen , New Mexico ) is an American politician . From 1999 to 2013 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives . In the 2012 election he was defeated by his Democratic competitor Gloria Negrete McLeod .

Career

Joe Baca served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968 and then attended California State University in Los Angeles until 1971 . He then worked for an electrical and telephone company for 15 years. He also began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1992 and 1999 he was a member of the California State Assembly ; in 1999 he served for some time in the California Senate .

After the death of Congressman George Brown , Baca was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the by-election for the 42nd seat of California , where he moved on November 16, 1999 and re-elected every two years until 2010 has been. Since 2003 he has represented the 43rd constituency of his state as the successor to Ken Calvert . During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . Baca was a member of the Agriculture Committee and the Finance Committee and in five sub-committees. From 2007 to 2008 he was the successor to Grace Napolitano as chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus . Within the party, he is part of the moderately conservative Blue Dog Coalition . In the 2012 congressional elections, he lost his constituency, which had been cut after the 2010 census, to his Democratic rival Gloria Negrete McLeod and resigned from the House of Representatives on January 3, 2013.

Baca and his wife have been running Interstate World Travel in San Bernardino since 1989 . The couple have five grown children and their son Joe Baca, Jr. was a member of the California State Assembly.
