J. Arthur Younger

Jesse Arthur Younger (born April 11, 1893 in Albany , Oregon , †  June 20, 1967 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1953 and 1967 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1904 Arthur Younger came to Kirkland , Washington state , where he attended public schools. He then studied until 1915 at the University of Washington in Seattle . He then headed the athletics department at this university until 1917. During the First World War , he first served in the National Guard of Washington State. After that he was deployed in the coastal artillery on the European theater of war. When he left military service, he had made it to the position of captain. Between 1920 and 1934, Younger worked for various credit institutions in Seattle. He then held various positions in government lending until 1952. Since 1937 he was based in San Mateo , California . From 1937 to 1952 he served as Vice President of the Citizens Federal Savings & Loan Association in San Francisco . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party .

In the 1952 congressional elections , Younger was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the ninth constituency of California, where he succeeded Allan O. Hunter on January 3, 1953 . After seven re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on June 20, 1967 ; he succumbed to leukemia . Since 1963 he represented the eleventh district of his state as the successor to John J. McFall . During his time as a congressman, the Cold War , the civil rights movement , the Cuban Missile Crisis and the beginning of the Vietnam War took place .
