Bradley J. "Brad" Sherman (born October 24, 1954 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American politician . Since 1997 he has represented a district of the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Brad Sherman attended Mark Kepple High School in Alhambra and Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach . He then studied at the University of California in Los Angeles until 1974 . After studying law at Harvard University and being admitted to the bar in 1979, he began working in this profession. He was also a sworn accountant and in this capacity worked for several companies. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1990 and 1995 he was a member of the California Revenue Equalization Commission; since 1991 he was chairman of this body.

In the 1996 congressional election , Sherman was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 24th  constituency of California , where he succeeded Anthony C. Beilenson on January 3, 1997 . After ten re-elections between 1998 and 2016 inclusive, he can continue to exercise his office today. His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018. Between 2003 and 2013 he represented Adam Schiff 's 27th district in his state. He has served in California's 30th Congressional District since 2013. During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . Sherman is or has been a member of the Finance Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee and four sub-committees.

He is married and lives in Sherman Oaks .

Foreign policy engagement

As a member of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, Brad Sherman has commented on a wide range of foreign policy issues:

In August 2010, Sherman tabled a bill aimed at revoking China's status as a Most Favored Nation as long as there was no "anywhere near a level playing field between our two nations."

Sherman is a strong advocate for US-Israeli relations and has always been a supporter of aid to Israel . In 2004, he was the first to introduce the US-Israel Energy Cooperation Act (US-Israeli Energy Cooperation Act). It grants funds for joint ventures between US and Israeli academics and private companies that conduct research and develop energy-efficient technologies for renewable energies .

As a member of the Foreign Policy Committee, Sherman has campaigned for Congress to recognize the Armenian genocide and to expand financial aid to Armenia and the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic .

In a letter to Viviane Reding , EU Commissioner for Justice and Fundamental Rights, and to Klaus-Heiner Lehne , Chairman of the Legal Affairs Committee of the EU Parliament , Sherman urged the EU authorities and Malta to press ahead with the investigation into the Rakhat Aliyev case . The Kazakh ex-ambassador u. a. accused of the murder of two Kazakh bankers , money laundering , bribery and extortion. "I cannot say whether the allegations are true, but as a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee I believe that these serious allegations must be fully resolved," Sherman explains in his letter.
