Legal Committee (European Parliament)

The Committee on Legal Affairs ( JURI ) is one of the twenty standing committees of the European Parliament . The committee chairman has been Lucy Nethsingha ( LibDem / RE ) since July 2019 .

The committee deals with the interpretation and application of international law and European law and the conformity of legal acts of the European Union with primary law (i.e. the EU Treaty and EC Treaty , in particular with the choice of legal bases and the principles of subsidiarity and proportionality ). He pays attention to the simplest possible codification of Community law and safeguards the rights of Parliament, for example in the case of actions before the European Court of Justice . He is also responsible for legislation in the areas of civil law , commercial law , company law , intellectual property , and procedural law and for judicial cooperation in civil matters (JZZ). He deals with the statutes of MEPs and EU staff and is responsible for matters relating to the political immunity of MEPs. He also maintains relations between the European Parliament and the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market .

The member responsible for legal issues in the European Commission is the Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship ; Administrative and personnel issues are the responsibility of the Commissioner for Administration . The responsible formation in the Council of the EU is the Justice and Home Affairs Council .
