The Office of the European Union for Intellectual Property (until March 23, 2016: Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market ( Trademarks , Designs and Models) , EUIPO for short ) based in Alicante (Spain) is an agency of the European Union responsible for the registration of Union trademarks and Community designs is responsible. The EUIPO is not responsible for other property rights, e.g. B. Patents .

About the office

The languages of the office are German , English , French , Italian and Spanish . It is a non-profit organization and is financed by collecting fees. In 2007 the office generated total income of over 200 million euros with around 650 employees and thus achieved a surplus of around 60 million euros.

history

The office was established by Regulation (EC) No. 40/94 on the Community trademark (as it was then called). It was not until Regulation (EC) No. 6/2002 on Community designs that it actually became more than a trademark office. In the deliberations about the establishment of the office, Spain prevailed, but the decision was not made for Madrid - there several international agreements on trademark law had been concluded - but for Alicante as the seat of the trademark office. With Regulation (EU) 2015/2424, the authority was renamed the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the Community trademark was renamed the European Union Trademark with effect from March 23, 2016 . With regard to design protection, the term community design remains for the time being .
