REA

The Executive Agency for Research ( REA , English R esearch E xecutive A gency ) is one of six currently executive agencies of the European Union . These occupy a special position among the EU agencies. They are established by the European Commission and are charged with managing one or more specific programs. They are not set up permanently, but only for a limited period of time and have the same rank as a Directorate General of the European Commission . The REA is currently limited to December 31, 2017. Furthermore, unlike the other EU agencies, these agencies must be located in Brussels or Luxembourg . The REA is based in Brussels.

The legal basis for this executive agency is, on the one hand, the EU Council Regulation 58/2003 of December 19, 2002 and the Commission decision (2008/46 / EC) of December 14, 2007.

The REA started its work in 2007. Your responsibilities will be to manage certain community programs in the areas of people , capacity and collaboration . The REA's mandate currently includes:

  • the administration of the Marie Curie fellowships and similar awards,
  • managing specific grant agreements to promote research in small and medium-sized enterprises,
  • the management of projects in the field of space exploration and
  • the management of projects in the field of security research.

It is accountable to the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation , the Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry and the Directorate-General for Education and Culture and manages funds from the 7th Framework Program for research amounting to over EUR 6.5 billion.
