The Translation Center for the Bodies of the European Union (CdT) is an EU agency based in Luxembourg. Its main role is to meet the multilingual communication needs of the EU agencies and other EU bodies. In addition, the EU institutions can, for their part, make use of the Centre's services if there is an increased need.
The center also contributes to inter-institutional cooperation between the different translation services of the EU with the aim of promoting the use of EU terminology and exchanging best practices and tools in the linguistic field.
The center provides services in the 24 official languages of the European Union as well as in various non-EU languages in a total of over 700 language combinations.

The Centre's mission is twofold. On the one hand, it consists in providing language services for the decentralized EU institutions (primarily the EU agencies) and, if necessary, for the EU institutions on the basis of cooperation agreements with each client. On the other hand, the center contributes to the interinstitutional cooperation between the different translation services of the EU with the aim of rationalizing working methods and harmonizing procedures.
history
Just one year after it was founded, in 1995, the competencies of the center were significantly expanded by Regulation (EC) No. 2610/95, which was passed on October 30th, as it was noticed that a further strengthening of interinstitutional cooperation in the field of the translations was necessary in order to better implement the resolutions and agreements made. This expansion brought about a major change in the tasks of the Translation Center.
The competence of the center is continuously expanded in order to meet the steadily growing number of orders resulting from the enlargement of the European Union - most recently the eastward expansion in 2004 and the expansion to include Romania and Bulgaria in 2007 . The current practice of translating all documents into at least the most important, if not all, official languages of the European Union also requires speeding up the process. A change in this procedure can only be expected with a major structural change within the Union. This will take place at the earliest when it will have 27 Member States.
Most recently, the tasks of the Translation Center were changed on June 18, 2003 by Regulation (EC) No. 1645/03.
The headquarters of the Translation Center for the Bodies of the European Union is, in accordance with the agreements reached on October 29, 1993 by the then Heads of State and Government of the Member States, on the headquarters of the decentralized bodies in Luxembourg City.

As part of the E-CODEX project , the center manages IATE , the world's largest terminology database, on behalf of the EU institutions .
Legal background
Council Regulation (EC) No. 2965/94 establishing the Translation Center was adopted by the Council of the European Union in November 1994. It has been amended twice: in 1995 (Council Regulation (EC) No 2610/95) in order to broaden the scope of the Centre's activities to include those institutions and bodies which already have their own translation service and to strengthen inter-institutional cooperation in the field of translation, and 2003 (Council Regulation (EC) No 1645/2003) to bring some provisions in line with the Council Regulation on the Financial Regulation applicable to the general budget of the European Communities.

The center is run by an administrative board made up of representatives from the Member States, its customers and two representatives from the European Commission. The Board of Directors is chaired by Rytis Martikonis , Director-General for Translation at the European Commission.
The Centre's legal representative is the Director, Máire Killoran, who is responsible for day-to-day business and is accountable to the Centre's Board of Directors.
Network of EU agencies
The translation center is a member of the network of EU agencies. The EU agencies were set up by the EU Member States and the EU institutions to provide services to businesses and citizens and to carry out specific legal, technical or scientific tasks within the framework of EU law.
