The European GNSS Agency ( english advertised European G lobal Navigation S atellite Systems A gency , shortened European GNSS Agency and as an abbreviation GSA called) is an agency of the European Union .

purpose

The GSA supports the European Commission in the construction and operation of a global navigation satellite system (GNSS).

In 2007 she took over the duties of the Galileo Joint Undertaking (GJU). The GJU was a joint undertaking of the European Commission and the ESA , which, among other things , was supposed to prepare the construction of the satellite navigation system Galileo . Today she carries out the European satellite navigation programs and monitors the Galileo and EGNOS projects . Its main tasks result from Article 16 of Regulation No. 683/2008 of July 9, 2008 and are:

  • to carry out the security-related accreditation of the systems and to take over the installation and operation of the Galileo security monitoring center and
  • to make the necessary preparations for the commercial use of the systems with a view to smooth operation.

Legal basis

As early as 2004, the Council of the European Union decided to found the GSA with Regulation No. 302/93 of February 8, 1993. In the context of the change in responsibilities and the financing, the tasks and the current name of the agency were most recently specified in Regulation No. 912/2010 of September 22, 2010.

Seat

The headquarters of the GSA was initially in Brussels, before Prague was chosen as the location in December 2010 . The GSA is located in the Holešovice district , next to Strossmayerplatz .
