NGC 3059 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBbc and is located in the constellation Carina in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 47 million light years from the Milky Way and about 55,000 light years in diameter. The galaxy has an angular extent of 3.6 '× 3.2' and an apparent magnitude of 10.8 mag.
The object was discovered by John Herschel on March 23, 1835 .
