NGC 3044 is a bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation areas of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Sextant south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 51 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 80,000 light years in diameter.

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 3039 , NGC 3042 , NGC 3062 .

The type IIL supernova SN 1983E was observed here.

The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on December 13, 1784 .
