Morphological Catalog of Galaxies

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Morphological Catalog of Galaxies ( MCG for short ) is a directory of 29,000 galaxies north of −30 ° declination .

The MCG was created by Boris Alexandrowitsch Voronzow-Veljaminow and colleagues on the basis of the images from the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS). The source designations (e.g. MCG + 15-01-001) are composed of the POSS zone designation calculated from the equator, the field number increasing with the right ascension and a consecutive number. The MCG contains coordinates, brightness, size and intensity of the inner and outer areas of the galaxies as well as references to earlier galaxy catalogs.
