NGC 3077 is an irregular galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type I0 in the constellation Great Bear in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 5 million light years from the Milky Way , about 20,000 light years in diameter, and a member of the M81 group .
About 300 million years ago, NGC 3077 interacted with the galaxy Messier 81 . This encounter created a bond of hydrogen gas between NGC 3077 and Messier 81, in which new stars have been forming for about 100 million years .
The object was discovered on November 8, 1801 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
