NGC 3078 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E3 in the constellation Hydra south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 106 million light years from the Milky Way .
Using images from the Hubble Space Telescope , the mass of the central black hole was estimated to be up to 300 million solar masses . In an enlarged section of this image, the dust disk around the center of the galaxy can be seen despite the great distance.
The galaxy is a member of the NGC 3054 group , which continues to include NGC 3051 , NGC 3054 , NGC 3084 , NGC 3089 , IC 2531 , IC 2537 , ESO 499-026, and PGC 28874 .
The object was discovered on December 9, 1784 by William Herschel with a 48 cm telescope.
