NGC 3096 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 in the constellation Hydra south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 180 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 55,000 light-years across. The galaxy is a member of the Hickson Compact Group HCG 42 .

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 3072 , NGC 3085 , NGC 3091 .

The object was discovered on March 23, 1835 by the astronomer John Herschel with a 48 cm telescope.
