NGC 3072 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Hydra south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 144 million light years from the Milky Way and about 85,000 light years in diameter. The galaxy is a member of the Hickson Compact Group HCG 42 . In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 3085 , NGC 3091 , NGC 3096 .
The Type Ic supernova SN 2007aw was observed here.
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on February 7, 1785 .
