NGC 3085 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Hydra south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 170 million light-years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 60,000 ly. The galaxy is a member of the Hickson Compact Group  HCG 42 . 
The galaxies NGC 3072 , NGC 3091 , NGC 3096 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by John Herschel on March 23, 1835 .
