NGC 3091 is an elliptical galaxy from the Hubble type E1 in the constellation Hydra south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 168 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 155,000 light-years across. The galaxy is a member of the Hickson Compact Group HCG 42 and the brightest galaxy in the NGC 3091 group ( LGG 186 ).

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 3072 , NGC 3085 , NGC 3096 .

The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on February 7, 1785 .
