The European Union Satellite Center ( EUSC , English E uropean U nion S atellite C entre ) is an agency of the European Union based in Torrejón near Madrid . Its tasks include the collection and analysis of information obtained with the help of satellites. The information is used for decision-making within the framework of the common foreign and security policy , the second pillar of the EU.

The center was decided on by the Council of the European Union on July 20, 2001 as part of a joint action within the meaning of Article 14 of the EU Treaty and began its operational work for the EU on January 1, 2002. The center's human and material resources have been taken over by the Western European Union , for which the center has been working since its establishment in 1992.

In addition to supporting decision-making, the center is also entrusted with training staff in the field of digital satellite image analysis and the creation of geographic information systems. The center works closely with the European Defense Agency and the European Maritime Safety Agency .

The head of the center has been Tomaž Lovrenčič (Slovenia) since January 1, 2010.
