The European Environment Agency ( EUA , English European Environment Agency , EEA ) is an agency of the European Union . It is an agency founded by the European Council in 1990 with Regulation (EEC) No. 1210/1990 . In 1994 the agency started its work in Copenhagen , Denmark . The Belgian Hans Bruyninckx has been Executive Director of the agency since 2013 . The Austrian Elisabeth Freytag-Rigler has been the chairman of the administrative board since September 2014.

Its job is to provide policy makers and the public with relevant information and data on the environment . To this end, the EEA also operates the European Environment Information and Observation Network (EIONET) and coordinates the CORINE Land Cover project .

The agency employs 216 people (as of June 2019) and has a budget of 54.5 million euros in the 2019 fiscal year (after 70.6 million euros in 2017 and 65.8 million euros in 2018), of which 45.2 million euros . (2017: 43 million; 2018: 41.6 million) euros from EU and EFTA contributions and 9.3 million (2017: 29 million; 2018: 22.7 million) euros from earmarked funds, such as that of the Copernicus Earth observation program .

The task of the EEA is to collect , process and provide relevant and reliable topic-specific information on the state and development of the environment at European level in good time .

For this purpose, the agency u. a. a database from which it draws information based on defined indicators that can serve as a basis for environmental policy decisions. The interactions between economic, social and ecological aspects of quality of life are increasingly taken into account.

The DPSIR model is fundamental for the indicators (CSIs) used . This model is used to represent environmental pollution and environmental protection measures . It describes driving forces, stresses, conditions, effects and reactions that affect the environment as a causal chain.

The founding regulation also provides for the EEA to publish a “report [...] on the state of the environment, trends and prospects for the environment” every five years. From March 3 to 6, 2015, the 2015 report was presented at a series of events in Brussels. The 2020 report was published on December 4, 2019.

  • As part of the Water Information System for Europe , the agency regularly publishes information on the quality of water.

    Members

    The agency currently (as of 2017) has 33 member states, including the 28 EU member states , as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey. The EEA also cooperates with the six south-east European countries Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia.

    According to the founding regulation, the agency is also open to non-member states of the EU that pursue goals similar to those of the Community in the field of environmental protection. Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway have been involved in its activities since the Agency was set up, and 12 of the 13 candidate countries joined in 2002, making the Agency the first Community body to welcome these countries as new members. Switzerland has also been a member state of the EEA since April 1, 2006. The agency also works actively with international institutions and organizations in the field of environmental protection.
