EFCA

The Community Fisheries Control Agency ( EFCA , English E uropean F isheries C ontrol A gency ) is an agency of the European Union based in the Spanish Vigo . In April 2005 the Council of the European Union decided to create this authority. As an important part of the common fisheries policy , it aims to ensure effective monitoring, control and enforcement of the rules of the common fisheries policy.

The agency has a board of directors made up of representatives from the European Commission and the member states. The Council draws up a work program for the agency and adopts the budget. On July 8, 2011, the Board of Directors appointed Pascal Savouret as Director of the Agency. In addition, a committee made up of representatives from the regional fishermen's councils was formed.

goals and tasks

  • Coordination of controls by the Member States within the framework of the Community's supervisory and control obligations;
  • Coordination of the use of the national control resources of the Member States concerned, which are pooled together, in accordance with this Regulation;
  • Assisting Member States in communicating information on fishing and control activities to the Commission and to third parties;
  • within the scope of responsibility: assisting the Member States in the fulfillment of their tasks and obligations under the provisions of the common fisheries policy;
  • Support of the Member States and the Commission in the harmonized implementation of the common fisheries policy throughout the Community;
  • Contribution to the research and development work of the Member States and the Commission in the field of control and monitoring methods;
  • Contribute to the coordination of inspector training and the exchange of experience between Member States;
  • Coordination of measures to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in accordance with Community rules.
