The General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church is a Theological College of the Episcopal Church in the United States , resulting in the Chelsea neighborhood in Manhattan ( New York City is located). It is the oldest seminary in the US Episcopal Church and the oldest surviving seminary in the Anglican community .
history
In May 1817 the General Convention, the supreme synodal body of the Episcopal Church, met in New York City and passed two resolutions. One was to establish a General Episcopal Seminary to be supported by the universal Church, and the second was to be in New York City.
The Bishop of New York , John Henry Hobart, served as the first dean of the seminary. Even after Hobart, the position of dean was fulfilled by the respective bishop of New York until the 1850s. Eugene Augustus Hoffman was appointed dean in 1878.
Education
The primary function of GTS is to prepare men and women for ordination in the Episcopal Church; in addition, other courses, including doctoral studies, can be attended. General is also home to two study centers:
