Frank Tracy Griswold III (born September 18, 1937 in Bryn Mawr , Pennsylvania ) was Presiding Bishop and head of the Episcopal Church in the USA from 1997 to 2006 .

After graduating from General Theological Seminary in New York City , he was ordained a priest in 1963 and served in three different wards in the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania . In 1985 he was ordained bishop in the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago by John Maury Allin , and served there from 1985 to 1987 as bishop coadjutor and then from 1987 to 1997 as bishop.

He was elected to the office of Presiding Bishop at the national church synod in 1997. His term of office expired on November 1, 2006 . His successor is Katharine Jefferts Schori .

Griswold wrote essential parts of the Eucharistic Prayer "B" in the Book of Common Prayer (1979).
