Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania
The Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania is a diocese of the Episcopal Church in the USA , which includes the counties of Philadelphia , Montgomery , Bucks , Chester and Delaware in the US state of Pennsylvania . It is one of the nine original dioceses of the Episcopal Church.
The diocese has more than 22,000 members in 155 parishes , making it the fifth largest diocese of the Episcopal Church. The bishopric is in Philadelphia. The administration of the diocese is located in the district of Society Hill , the Cathedral of the Bishop, however, in the district of University City , adjacent to the campuses of the two universities University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University . Until the designation of the current cathedral (formerly the parish church Church of the Savior ), St. Mary's in the Roxborough district served as a cathedral. The new cathedral is also the ceremonial seat of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA); the Episcopal Church and the ELCA are in full church fellowship.
The current bishop is the Right Reverend Charles E. Bennison, Jr., and the Right Reverend Clarence Coleridge serves as auxiliary bishop . As of November 4, 2007, Bishop Bennison has been prohibited from serving as a bishop or priest, according to an order from the Presiding Bishop , Katharine Jefferts Schori , because he had failed to take the necessary steps as a pastor of a congregation in California in 1973 when he learned his Brother is in an extramarital relationship with a minor . Previously there was a lengthy dispute with the cathedral chapter about financial management.
