The European Institute for Gender Equality ( EIGE , English E uropean I nstitute for G forming E quality ) is an agency of the European Union . The institute was founded by Regulation (EC) No. 1922/2006 of December 20, 2006. The institute started its work in 2007. The institute is based in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius .

tasks

The institute aims to support the institutions and member states of the European Union in realizing gender equality and in combating gender-based discrimination ( sexism ). The institute was endowed by the European Commission with a budget of 52.5 million euros for the period 2007 to 2013. It is intended to collect, evaluate and disseminate research results and information for politicians. A documentation center was set up, as well as a public library.

organization

The governing body of the institute is the administrative board . It consists of 18 representatives from the EU member states and one representative from the EU Commission. Eva Maria Welskop-Deffaa is the chairman of the board of directors . In addition, the institute has the Advisory Board , an expert forum, 27 of whose members have been delegated by the member states, two from the European Parliament and three from the EU Commission. The last three are representatives of non-governmental, employer and employee organizations active throughout Europe.
