Strossmayerovo náměstí (colloquially Štrosmajrák , German Strossmayerplatz ) is a square in the Prague district of Holešovice .

history

From 1908 to 1925 the square was called Bubenské náměstí , after the suburb of Bubny which was incorporated into Holešovice . In 1925 it was named in honor of Josip Juraj Strossmayer , an important Croatian bishop . Between 1961 and 1968 he was named Kopeckého náměstí after the communist politician Václav Kopecký who died in 1961 . On July 10, 1973, the mass murderer Olga Hepnarová drove here in a truck into a group of around 25 people who were waiting for a tram .

Traffic significance

Although the square is quite small, it is of great importance for local public transport. Numerous tram lines operated by the Prague public transport company cross there. The square is also connected to the metro via the Vltavská station . Already at the beginning of the 21st century there was an intention to create an extensive pedestrian zone , but this was not realized. In 2007 the square was rebuilt, the pavement was renewed and the eastern part became a pedestrian zone.
