The Nehrkorn mistletoe ( Dicaeum nehrkorni ) is a species of bird in the mistletoe family (Dicaeidae). It is endemic to the Indonesian island of Sulawesi . The type epithet refers to the German ornithologist Adolph Nehrkorn .

features

The Nehrkorn mistletoe reaches a length of 8.5 centimeters. In the male, the crown and rump are bright purple. The forehead, the stripe above the eyes , the back of the head and the rest of the top are shiny blue-black. The throat, chest and flanks are gray. The chest shows a purple blotch and white tufts. The lower abdomen is white with a black-brown central stripe. The iris is dark. The beak is dark brown to black. The legs are blackish. The female is more dull in color than the male. The red color of the crown, the chest mark and the lower abdominal stripes are missing. The young birds look similar to the females. They lack the red color on the rump. The singing consists of a " zit-zit ", which is reproduced in a short, sharp double note as well as a repetitive, hard " tit " and high-pitched insect-like trills.

habitat

The Nehrkorn mistletoe lives in mountain forests and forest edges at altitudes between 200 and 2400 m.

Way of life

The diet consists of fruits, including wild cherries ( Prunus ) and berries and presumably from the nectar and pollen of the belt flower family (Loranthaceae). It occurs predominantly in the canopy of leaves and searches for food individually or in pairs, where it can often be observed in mixed flocks of birds. Its breeding and migration behavior has not been adequately researched.

Existence and endangerment

The common mistletoe eater is widespread, but generally not numerous. It is most common at higher altitudes. It occurs in several protected areas, including the Lore Lindu National Park , in central Sulawesi. The IUCN classifies it as not endangered.
