The Kalamanta core area was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1973 and was included in the UNESCO program “Man and Biosphere” in 1977 as a biosphere reserve. In 1978 the area around Lake Lindu became a wildlife sanctuary, and in 1981 the Lore Lindu sanctuary was created from the union of the two protected areas. The next year the protected area was given national park status by the Indonesian government. The official opening took place in 1993.

The park and its buffer zone were examined by the STORMA research center ( Stability of the Rainforest Margin in Indonesia ), which was operated from 2000 to 2009 in an Indonesian-German collaboration. On the Indonesian side were the Pertanian Bogor Institute ( Bogor , Java ) and the Universitas Tadulako ( Palu , Sulawesi); on the German side, the Georg-August University of Göttingen and the University of Kassel .
