The Indonesian island of Siberut is the largest in the west before Sumatra lying Mentawai Islands .
geography
Overview
The island is more than 140 km off Sumatra, in the south is the island of Sipora , in the north are the Batu Islands . Siberut is 3828.5 km² and up to 384 m high. In the south of it are the small islands of Karamajet and Masokut in the bungalow street . Muarasiberut, the most important place and port of the Mentawai Islands, is located on Siberut . The capital of the archipelago is Tua Pejat on the neighboring island of Sipora.
After the earthquake in the Indian Ocean off Sumatra in 2004, seismic activity under the island has increased significantly.
On Siberut are the districts ( Kecamatan ) South Siberut (Siberut Selatan) and North Siberut (Siberut Utara) . They are part 1999 from the islands administrative region formed ( Kabupaten ) Mentawai Islands, in turn, part of the province West Sumatra (Sumatra Barat) is.

Population and culture
After the last ice age , the island was separated from Sumatra by rising sea levels. Around 2000 BC BC Siberut was settled from the north. The inhabitants differ from the inhabitants of Sumatra in terms of language and customs. There are still tribes living in the Stone Age today . The Sakuddei tribe , a group of Mentawai , live in long houses , the Uma . They practice a cult of spirits and ancestors.
The island now has around 30,000 residents. Most of the residents are Christians.
The tuddukat is a local slit drum from the island.
history
In 1792 a British East India Company ship reached the Mentawai Islands. In 1847, 1849 and 1852 the German naturalist Hermann von Rosenberg toured the island. It was not until 1864 that Siberut became part of the Dutch East Indies . In January 1899 a German research ship explored the sea off Siberut as part of the Valdivia expedition . In 1901 German missionaries reached the Mentawai Islands. After Indonesia's independence, the native animistic religion was banned.
tourism
Mid-1990s discovered Australian surfers with the islands of Siberut also for surfing . There are also organized tours for backpackers to the Stone Age villages from Padang .
