South China Sea - northwest of Borneo are the Natuna Islands |
The Natuna Islands ( Indonesian : Kabupaten Natuna ) are a group of islands in Indonesia in the South China Sea .
They belong to the province of Kepulauan Riau and are the northernmost Indonesian group of islands, whose territorial affiliation is undisputed. Together with the Anambas , Badas and Tambelan Islands , they form the Tudjuh Archipelago . The Subi, Sejang and Seresan Islands also belong to this archipelago.
The Natuna Islands comprise 272 islands between Borneo and Vietnam , northeast of the Anambas Islands . The islands have a population of around 100,000 people, most of whom work as farmers or fishermen. There is no pronounced tourism.
The main island of Natuna Besar (also called Ranai) has an area of 1,720 km². Gunung Ranai is the highest mountain in the archipelago at 1,035 m. The island can be reached by boat from Jakarta or Tanjung Pinang , and small planes operate from Batam .
China recognizes Indonesia's sovereignty, but does not accept the exclusive economic zone and invokes “traditional Chinese fishing grounds”, which, however, has no meaning under international law.
