Padang ( Indonesian Pulau Padang ) is an Indonesian island off the east coast of Sumatra in the Strait of Malacca .

geography

With an area of ​​around 1109 km², it is the third largest of a series of islands in this region after Rantau and Rupat , each separated by an inlets just a few kilometers wide. To the west of Padang lies Sumatra, to the east the island of Merbau , to the southeast the island of Rantau and to the north the island of Bengkalis . Padang is 60 km long in north-south direction, up to 29 km wide and consistently flat.

Administratively, the island of Padang belongs to the administrative district ( Kabupaten ) Kepulauan Meranti of the province of Riau and, together with the island of Merbau to the east, forms the sub-district ( Kecamatan ) Merbau , which has 47,370 inhabitants (status: 2007). The 15 or so villages are all close to the coast. The main town is Teluk Belitung .
