Merbau ( Indonesian Pulau Merbau ) is an Indonesian island off the east coast of Sumatra in the Strait of Malacca .

It belongs to a series of islands lying off the east coast of Sumatra, each separated by a narrow arm of the sea. Padang is to the west of the island , Rantau to the south and Rangsang to the east . Merbau is separated from Rantau by an arm of the sea that is only around 100 meters wide and 14.3 km long, which means that Merbau does not appear as a separate island on many maps. Merbau is flat throughout.

administration

The island of Merbau together with Padang forms the sub-district ( Kecamatan ) Merbau , which in turn belongs to the administrative district ( Kabupaten ) Kepulauan Meranti of the province of Riau . In 2007 the Merbau sub-district had 47,370 inhabitants.
