Rangsang ( Indonesian Pulau Rangsang ) is an Indonesian island off the east coast of Sumatra in the Strait of Malacca .
geography
With an area of almost 908 km², it is the fifth largest of a whole series of islands lying off the east coast of Sumatra, each separated by an inlets just a few kilometers wide. North of Rangsang lies the Strait of Malacca and south of Rangsang is the island of Rantau , from which it is separated by the Airhitam Strait . Also to the south, east of Rantau, are the small islands of Tupang and Serapung , and even further to the east is the larger Mendol . To the east of Rangsang are the islands of Karimun Besar , Karimun and Kundur .
Rangsang is around 60 km long, up to 18 km wide and flat throughout.
administration
Administratively, the island of Rangsang belongs to the administrative district ( Kabupaten ) Kepulauan Meranti of the province Riau and consists of the two sub-districts ( Kecamatan ) Rangsang and Rangsang Barat which together have 57,876 inhabitants (as of 2007). The two main places are Tanjung Samak on the southeast coast and Banto in the west of the island.
