Karimun ( Indonesian Pulau Karimun ) belongs to the Indonesian Riau Islands off the east coast of Sumatra in the Malay Archipelago .

geography

Karimun is located east of the Sumatra island of Rangsang , north of the Sumatra island of Kundur and its sub-islands, west of Batam and southwest of Singapore . It is located at the entrance of the Strait of Malacca and at the southern end of the South China Sea .

Karimun has been an administrative district (Kabupaten) in the province of the Riau Islands since 1999 . The islands of Kundur and Moro also belong to the administrative district .

The district capital is Tanjung Balai in the south, which has a large Chinese community. Other places are Malarko in the north, Semamal in the west and Mantang in the south. The island has over 150,000 inhabitants (1997).

The highest mountain at 77 meters is Gunung Jantan in the north of the island.

Earlier who was fishing important until its meaning by overfishing lost. Granite as well as sand were exported, the sand for land reclamation off Singapore, among other things. In 2007 the export of sand was restricted. There are several shipyards and oil tanks on Karimun. More shipyards and other industrial companies are to follow. In addition, a free trade zone is planned as part of a special economic zone in the province with Batam , Bintan and Karimun (BBK). Preparations were completed in 2007.

On the island are the famous beaches Pelawan and Pongkar as well as the waterfall Air Terjun Pongkar . Upstream are the holiday islands of Terkulai and Soreh . Karimun is also a destination for sex tourists from Malaysia and Singapore .
