The island of Kundur ( Indonesian Pulau Kundur ; "Island Kundur" ) belongs to the Indonesian Riau Islands off the east coast of Sumatra in the Malay Archipelago .

geography

Kundur is located south of the island of Karimun and its subsidiary islands, also off Sumatra, and west of Batam , at the entrance to the Strait of Malacca and at the southern end of the South China Sea .

The island's capital is Tanjung Batu in the southeast. Other places are Urung in the east, Selat Belia in the north and Sawang and Kobek in the west. The island has an area of ​​315.4 km², the highest point is 98 m.

A chain of small islands begins north of Kundur: Papit , Gunung Papan with the settlement of Tanjung Hutan , Baru and Balat . It stretches to the east of Kundur and includes a large number of other, very small islets.

traffic

Ferries run from Tanjung Batu to Singapore, Sekupang on Batam and Tanjung Pinang on Bintan and to Tanjung Balai on Karimun. The journey to Singapore takes 2 hours and 15 minutes. From Selat Belia there is a ferry to Tanjung Balai on Karimun.

administration

In 1999 the administrative district of Karimun was formed with the islands of Karimun, Kundur and Moro.
