Rupat ( Indonesian Pulau Rupat ) is an Indonesian island off the northeast coast of Sumatra in the Strait of Malacca .

With an area of 1490 km², after Rantau, it is the second largest of a whole series of islands in this region; the closest of these islands is in southeast Bengkali .
Rupat is an approximately circular and flat island with a circumference of 154 km and a diameter of about 50 km. Rupat is separated from the island of Sumatra in the south by an arm of the sea, the Rupat Strait ( Selat Rupat ), which is only around two kilometers wide .
administration
Administratively, the island belongs to the administrative district ( Kabupaten ) Bengkalis of the province Riau and consists of the two sub-districts ( Kecamatan ) Rupat in the south and Rupat Utara in the north. Rupat is inhabited by about 30,000 people; the two most important settlements on the island are the respective main towns of the sub-districts, Batu Panjang in the south and Tanjung Medang on the north coast.
