In the following two seasons Mauro, at the age of not even 20 years, was a regular for Catanzaro in the top Italian division and was able to reach single-digit table positions with the Calabrian club.

At Juve , he immediately won the World Cup and the Scudetto in his first season under coach Giovanni Trapattoni . The following three seasons were less successful for Mauro at the record champions. In 1988 he took part with the Italian Olympic team at the Summer Olympics in Seoul and just barely missed a medal after losing 3-0 in the game for third place against Germany.
For the 1989/90 season Massimo Mauro went to SSC Napoli . There, alongside greats like Diego Maradona , Careca or Gianfranco Zola , he immediately won the championship again. In the following three years, Mauro was not used as often. At the end of the 1992/93 season he ended his professional career after 307 Serie A games with 14 goals.
