Catanzaro is a southern Italian municipality , capital of the Calabria region and the Catanzaro province with 88,313 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). The city extends over an area of 102.3 km² and is the seat of the Archdiocese of Catanzaro-Squillace .
location
Geographically, Catanzaro is located roughly in the middle of Calabria, on the Isthmus of Marcellinara , where the Ionian Sea is only 35 kilometers from the Tyrrhenian . The neighboring municipalities are Borgia , Caraffa di Catanzaro , Gimigliano , Pentone , San Floro , Sellia , Settingiano , Simeri Crichi and Tiriolo .
The old town is about 10 kilometers inland on three hills above the deeply cut valleys of the Fiumarella and Musofalo . The municipality extends today with a few suburbs like Catanzaro Lido down to the Ionian Sea .
history
Catanzaro was founded in the 10th century as a Byzantine fortress against Saracen raids. The city has been known for the manufacture of silk since the 11th century , and later also velvet and damask . In the 13./14. In the 19th century, the Counts Ruffo were enfeoffed with the rule of Catanzaro. Under the Aragonese rule over the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies , the city experienced a great boom in the late Middle Ages. After a period of decline, the city did not recover until around 1800. Catanzaro became a railway junction and a trading center for wheat, oil and wine . The red wine Lamezia is produced near Catanzaro (see also the article on viticulture in Italy ).
In 1970 the city became the capital of the Calabria region instead of Reggio Calabria . The regional parliament continues to meet in Reggio Calabria, the government and many important authorities now have their seat in Catanzaro.

Catanzaro is on the Strada Statale 280 "dei Due Mari" with the car Strada A2 connected. Catanzaro Lido is accessed from the SS 106 coastal road.
tram
Catanzaro had an urban tram from 1910 to 1954 , which was operated between Pié Sala and Piazza Roma as a funicular with tractor operation. The line between Catanzaro Sala and Piazza Roma has been in operation as a funicular since 1998 .
railroad
The Taranto – Reggio di Calabria line , the line to Lamezia Terme and the narrow-gauge railway to Cosenza all meet at Catanzaro Lido station . In 2008, the old route leading through the city center to Lamezia Terme was replaced by a new route. Since then, the city center has been developed exclusively by the narrow-gauge railway, which is operated as an S-Bahn ( Italian : Servizio ferroviario urbano) and is equipped with a rack between Catanzaro Sala and Catanzaro Pratica .
